Time for a sing-along.
As some o'ye landlubbers know, t'last weekend, I's been playin' the cello in a certain Victorian piratical-themed light opera. So without further ado...
I've never liked the synthesized orchestra in this film version, but Kevin Kline is one of the best Pirate Kings ever. (And I say this having seen Jon English do it live. Twice.)
It's based on the New York Metropolitan Opera production from around 1980, which a lot of companies subsequently copied.
This song is one of my favourites from the whole Gilbert & Sullivan corpus. There's a very fine line between a life of politics and a life of crime. The main difference is that crime is more violent, yet, in a way, much more honest.
